Kodak Goes Up Against Samsung and LG in Patent Fight
Eastman Kodak Co. is not happy. At least not with the current #2 and #5 largest phone manufacturers, Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. The imaging giant filed a lawsuit against both South Korean conglomerates in New York, and, as an added bonus, also lodged a complaint with the International Trade Commission. According to Kodak, the two companies - what else? - infringed on a couple digital camera patents 1993, 1997, 2001.
The ITC filing is no joke - just take a look at the war between Broadcom and Qualcomm. After ruling in Broadcom’s favor, the ITC banned the importation of any phones that contained Qualcomm’s patent-infringing chips. If the ITC takes Kodak’s side in this latest dispute, a good chunk of Samsung and LG’s mobile phones could conceivably be barred from entering the country. Nasty!
“We’ve held discussions with both companies in an attempt to resolve this issue and have not been able to reach a satisfactory agreement,” said Laura Quatela, Kodak’s chief intellectual property officer. “Consequently, we must take this legal action.”
Interestingly, Kodak has already licensed patents to Nokia, Motorola, and Sony, and the company holds over 1,000 patents related to digital cameras.
